Redshirt explores sexuality in a way that a respondent to the Queer Representation (2016) survey referred to as 'interesting'. Developer, Mitu Khandaker said the following in an article at Polygon: 'The way that Redshirt deals with sexuality is such: While our profiles define how we choose to present ourselves to others, whether or not other characters respect this is up to them.'

This has led to some positive and negative forms of representation in terms of sexuality, gender, and relationships. With some parts of the game intended to be social commentary—such as the bigoted treatment of the Asrion race—the game has received mixed opinions.

Still, Redshirt allows players to explore identities with an interesting level of freedom.
